Exploring the Malham Cove, Gordale Scar, and Janet’s Foss Circular Walk

If you’re looking for an unforgettable hiking experience in the Yorkshire Dales, the Malham Cove, Gordale Scar, and Janet’s Foss circular walk is a must-do. This hike offers stunning limestone formations, breathtaking waterfalls, and picturesque countryside. Starting Point:
Malham National Park Visitor Centre, Malham (don’t forget to grab your FREE walk guide from the centre)

Parking:
Plenty of parking is available at the Malham National Park Visitor Centre (postcode BD23 4DA). There are also a couple of other car parks in the village.

Approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 km)

Walk Time:
Around 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace and stops

Difficulty:
2/5 although it would be a 1 if it wasn’t for the 400 steep steps to the top!
Moderate - includes some steep steps and uneven terrain

Best Time to Visit:
Spring to Autumn, although it’s beautiful year-round


Malham National Park Visitor Centre

Your adventure begins in the charming village of Malham, where you can find parking at the Malham National Park Visitor Centre. Pop inside to pick up a free visitor guide, which will give you a handy overview of the walk and other attractions in the area. Plus, the friendly staff are always willing to give you a few local tips.

Malham Cove

From the visitor centre, follow the well-signposted path towards Malham Cove. This majestic limestone amphitheatre stands at around 260 feet high and was formed by a waterfall carrying meltwater from glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. The view from the base is absolutely stunning, and you’ll probably want to take a few photos before you tackle the climb to the top.



400 Steps

Prepare yourself for a bit of a workout as you ascend the 400 stone steps to the top of Malham Cove. It’s a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort. On a clear day, you can see for miles across the Yorkshire Dales. Take your time and enjoy the spectacular scenery – there’s no rush!

Gordale Scar

Once you’ve soaked in the views from Malham Cove, follow the path to Gordale Scar. This dramatic limestone ravine is a sight to behold, with its towering cliffs and cascading waterfall. The path can be a bit rocky and uneven here, so take care as you make your way through the gorge. It’s a truly awe-inspiring spot, and you might want to linger a while to take it all in.



Pit stop

After exploring Gordale Scar, you’ll probably be ready for a little break. Luckily, you’re in for a treat with Gordale Refreshments nearby. Grab yourself an ice cream or a hot drink, and have a rest before continuing on your walk. It’s the perfect spot to recharge your batteries.

Janet’s Foss

Refreshed and ready to go, continue along the trail towards Janet’s Foss. This enchanting waterfall, surrounded by lush woodland, is said to be home to a fairy queen named Janet. Whether or not you believe the legend, there’s no denying the magical atmosphere of this place. The waterfall plunges into a deep pool, which is a lovely spot for a quick paddle if you’re feeling brave!



Back to Malham for a Pint

The final leg of the walk takes you back to Malham village. As you stroll back, take a moment to appreciate the stunning countryside – it’s easy to see why this area is so beloved by walkers. Once you’re back in the village, reward yourself with a pint at one of the local pubs. The Lister Arms and The Buck Inn are both excellent choices, offering a warm welcome and a chance to relax after your hike.
